A Stunning Spring Wedding at Rockbeare Manor Was a Delight to Photograph for Mel and Dan
The grand pillared entrance and tree-lined driveway offer just a hint of the elegance that awaits at Rockbeare Manor. But nothing truly prepares you for the breathtaking sight of the stately home, nestled gracefully within the wild yet beautifully maintained countryside, as you reach the end of the drive. And that’s only the beginning—step inside, and the interior is every bit as enchanting.
A Dedicated Glow Up Barn
As I arrived early on the morning of the wedding, the soft hum of excitement was already in the air. Mel and her girls were nestled into the cosy bridal prep room, easing into the day with flutes of chilled Bucks Fizz in hand. Laughter bubbled up between brush strokes and curling tongs, but everything remained calm and unhurried—just the right mix of energy and ease.
This delightful little room is a true hidden gem for smaller bridal party preparations. Is is tucked well out of the way of the hustle and bustle of the venue preparations. It has three hair and makeup stations, each with large, well-lit mirrors so you can watch your makeover take shape. Plush seating lines the space for those waiting their turn, allowing everyone to relax, chat, and take it all in. It’s the kind of setting that gently eases you through the morning, with style, comfort, and just the right amount of sparkle.
The Bridal Suite of Dreams
A couple of hours before the ceremony, the bridal party moves into the main bridal suite—a spacious and serene setting where everything comes together. It’s the perfect space for final touches, last-minute adjustments, and a quiet moment to gather your thoughts before the day unfolds. With everyone dressed and ready, full of anticipation, it becomes a beautiful pause before the celebration begins.
Groom Prep in the Snooker Room
I visit many venues throughout the year, and one feature that always excites me is when there’s a dedicated space for the groom and his groomsmen to get ready. Rockbeare Manor not only offers this thoughtful addition but does so in style, with the Billiards Room serving as the perfect backdrop. The room exudes character with its dimly lit ambiance, the iconic billiards table at its heart, and the grand painted portraits that seem to watch over those who enter—creating a unique, almost cinematic atmosphere for the groom and his party to prepare in.
Marriage Vows under a Chandelier
As a photographer, I love the variety of settings for vows at Rockbeare Manor. Mel and Dan chose the elegant Dining Room for their ceremony, with its natural light flooding through the bay windows, ornate plasterwork, huge crystal chandelier and feature fireplace.
Mel and Dan loved the whole venue, and although the weather was ideal, they chose the Dining Room for their ceremony, knowing the outdoor areas would still be enjoyed throughout the rest of the day.
For larger ceremonies, the Ballroom offers a spacious, airy feel with contemporary chandeliers and panoramic views of the parkland. In Spring or Summer, the outdoor terrace beneath the South Pavilion archway is a dream, with views of the Manor and Dartmoor beyond—an idyllic, quintessentially English backdrop for vows.
Reception Drinks on the Lawn
The balconies of the bridal suite aren’t just ideal for capturing beautiful bridal portraits—they also offer a great vantage point for wide group shots of all your guests.
After the confetti toss and a quick photo from above, Mel and Dan’s guests spread out across the venue. Some gathered in the sun-soaked front courtyard, while others relaxed in the shade on the back lawn. One thing almost everyone enjoyed, though, was the ice cream cart, provided by the venue and served by the staff—a perfect treat on such a bright, sunny day.
Couple Shots at Rockbeare
I was genuinely spoilt for choice when it came to backdrops for Mel and Dan’s portraits. As with all weddings where the couple has children, I like to start with some relaxed family photos before letting the kids rejoin the celebrations and keeping the couple back for some time on their own.
Naturally, I wanted to include as much of Rockbeare Manor as possible, and the front courtyard was perfect for that—ideal for both the family shots and some beautiful portraits of Mel and Dan. The manicured gardens, the sweeping wildflower meadow, and even the long, winding driveway all offered stunning settings. Honestly, I wasn’t exaggerating when I said I had an abundance of incredible spots to choose from!
In a nutshell, Mel and Dan’s wedding couldn’t have been more beautiful—full of joy, sunshine, and effortless elegance in the stunning surroundings of Rockbeare Manor. And to top it off, they were genuinely lovely people—it was a real privilege to witness them tie the knot.
