I have blogged a few times about Trevenna and each and every time, all I ever have is superlatives to describe not only the venue itself but also the team that run the weddings there. Being very local to me, it is always a treat to head to Trevenna for a wedding, and although the barns with its stone clad walls and the twinkling lights of the threshing barn are so iconic, each and every wedding here still feels different. At my last visit, I thought back to how the four most recent weddings I shot here were so very different and despite the differences in the weather, how perfectly this venue worked for every eventuality. Take a look at how Trevenna looks through the seasons with the four weddings below.
Dan & Anna's 'British Summer' Wedding
Hear the words ‘typical British summer’ and what do you think of?! The unpredictable weather perhaps? Well you would be on the right track! Anna and Dan had it all, a layer of mist in the morning before the blazing hot sun burnt it away, followed by a biblical scale downpour just before their ceremony – cue guests with umbrellas sat waiting outside by the arbour! We were blessed with a rainbow during the couple portraits and then when we had almost lost all hope, the clouds parted and we were shone on by the most beautiful golden hour light!
Georgia & Tom’s Winter Wedding Wonderland at Trevenna
Just over a week before Christmas, Georgia and Tom tied the knot at Trevenna in a whimsical winter wonderland, or that is very much how it felt inside the cosy barns adorned with twinkling fairy lights, the wood burner roaring and a 15 foot Christmas tree magically embracing the corner of the room. The outside of the venue however told a different story and wind, rain and that delightful Cornish grey mizzle that lasts the whole day through just didn’t shift all day. We managed a tight ten minutes outside for some portraits of the couple before not only were they being blown away but the wet stuff had returned and was falling from the sky at an incredible rate. This did not matter in the slightest though. One of the most marvelous things about Trevenna is that every area of the venue that you use on the day is so picturesque that you don’t actually need to go outside for those money shots. Just look at these ceremony and speeches photos – beautiful.
Jenny & Josh’s Summer Heatwave Wedding at Trevenna
I remember getting out of the car at 9am and seeing the thermometer on the car reading 22 degrees Celsius when I got to this wedding. I have mentioned before in another blog that often there is a contingency plan for if we get unfavourable weather at a wedding when an outside celebration is planned. Never though is there a plan for if the weather is too good! Jenny & Josh’s wedding day weather was too good! The type of weather that makes all of the guests happy but can make a photographer feel a little hot under pressure and not just because of the temperature. The thing with bright sunshine and no cloud cover is the fact that everyone in your photos are squinting, there are weird shadows under your chin and eyes and also the sunglasses… yes they look cool but they take so much away from the emotion of photos. I found myself in this predicament on my arrival but genuinely I needn’t have worried. The wedding arbour is under the shade of a huge oak tree, and all of the guests tend to be sheltered around the time of most ceremonies. I like to think about how many marriages that tree has witnessed and how it would tell the love stories it has witnessed over the years. There are also lots of very sheltered spaces for the rest of your photographs if you do get that blazing sunshine on your Trevenna wedding day. The inside spaces are as beautiful as the outside and also that lane… the iconic Trevenna lane that in the blistering heat of summer, still provides the most beautiful dappled light to create the most romantic of wedding day portraits.
Heather & Matt’s Warm and Cosy Autumnal Wedding at Trevenna
Following on from the Trevenna lane in the heat of the summer, reminded me of Heather & Matt’s Autumnal wedding where the leaves had turned reddish, brown and had created a carpet of autumnal leaves on the floor. This was just as dreamy as in any other season and the portraits of the couple are beautifully whimsical. The other difference for Heather and Matt’s wedding, other than the changing season was the use of the Mowhay Barn for their ceremony. Dressed in white drapes, this bright, airy, sunlit space have us all of the autumn sunshine but without the chill of the breeze. It was my first experience of shooting a ceremony in this space but one that I know I would be excited to repeat in a heart beat.
So, there we have it. Trevenna across all four seasons, with every possible kind of weather (other than snow- if someone could arrange for this to happen and me to come and photograph it, I’d be made up!!). I guess in a nutshell, if you are thinking about Trevenna for your wedding and cant decide what time of year to choose, I probably haven’t helped much because let’s face it, this venue is practically perfect in every way no matter what time of year you visit!
